Reinventing Classics

classicsClassic literature is often a phrase that people shy away from. They think that whenever a classic is mentioned a teacher is going to force them to read Bronte, Austen, Dickens or Hardy but this is a well-preserved myth. I believe that that classics have been misinterpreted, understood to be boring and tedious when, in fact, they can be wholly enjoyable. Many books are said to be classics because they have sold millions of copies and the author has been long deceased which can give the impression that the novel will be old fashioned or lack a decent plot. Author Mark Twain defined a literary classic as “a book which people praise but do not read” and this is, to some extent, true. Hence, I want to change this narrow view of classics. Girl Heart Girl is a book which gives a detailed narrative of Lucy Sutcliffe’s life during childhood, adolescence and young adulthood. Sutcliffe has already made a number of films which she has posted on YouTube which detail parts of her life, especially the joys and trials of a long-distance relationship.
