The Greatest Thing in the World by Henry Drummond

I was lent this book by a friend after he read one of my blog posts about faith as he thought I might find it interesting and useful.

The main focus of the first part of the book is that God is love and we should love others if we wish to be like God.

This part looks at what the greatest thing in the world is (spoiler: it’s love!); the programme of Christianity; the city without a church; the changed life; and pax vobiscum.

The second part of the book focuses on the idea that the purpose of our lives is to do the will of God.

This part looks at what being a man after God’s own heart looks like; God’s will and the Christian’s aim what God’s will is; how we can know the will of God; and the relation of the will of God to sanctification.

I did find the book very interesting. It provided a fresh insight into what faith should mean and look like in our everyday lives. It helped me to see that the things I value about Christianity are the most important things; that the parts I question and am less sure about do not matter as much.

If only everyone agreed on the basic principles and did not get stuck in arguing about other aspects that should not be given such importance.

Modern society has shaped the appearance, presentation and reality of Christianity but this book helps us see more of the fundamental truths and steps outside this modern narrative.

I would recommend reading this book to refresh your knowledge on Christianity and to help you question some of the things that it is believed that the church teaches. It is also a useful tool for learning about the basic ideas and beliefs of Christianity for yourself, rather than getting them from other people.
